Funny Phonics Lesson 5 a Th

Funny Phonics Lesson 5 a, Th

This and That

These two words are easily confused,

This refers to an object that is near, and that refers to an object far away.

The sound th is made with the teeth on the tongue, sometimes voiced and sometime not.  I don't know of any rule, so the students need to memorize that "This" is not voiced and "That" is voiced.

Basic Lesson Plan to use with all the lessons in this series:

Step 1
Teach the new letters.
Since we are online, ask the student to get a blank notebook, and draw the letter after you.
Then say the sound of the letter, and what letter in the student's Native language.

Step 2 Find a word together that starts with the sound that the student might know.
Ask the student to draw the picture of the word, along with the letter in English.
Do this for all the new letters.

Step 3. Go over the new vocabulary.
I will give a vocabulary list in a number of languages to make it easier for teachers to teach to many students.
Aske the student to draw a picture of each word in their notebook, along with the word in English.

Step 4 Read the story with the student.  I encourage the student to read the story alone, and then afterwards I read it again with the student.

Step 5  Ask the questions about the story: In the beginning, I use the student's native language, and accept that the student will answer in the native language.   Later on as the student knows more English I will ask the questions in English and expect the answer in English.

Step 6. If you can, you can play a game with the student, you can use the templates on this link to write up games.
