Funny Phonics Lesson 1 - Hickey Method Simplified

Learning a new language can be very hard, I know because I came to Israel, and I had to be able to communicate on Day 1!  Nowadays, more Israelis know English and an English speaker can get by.

I am an Online English teacher and sometimes it is difficult to find exactly the right level for my students from all over the world.

So I am writing my own Phonics series: Funny Phonics.  I am not an artist, so if my illustrations don't come out so well, so you understand.

This series is based on the Hickey Method, but some of the lessons, especially at the beginning are a bit too much for a person who doesn't even know the alphabet in English.  So I am simplifying the stories and how the letters are introduced.  https://www.teachenglishliteracy.org/documents-for-download  I have two of my own lessons on this site,

Basic Lesson Plan to use with all the lessons in this series:
Step 1
Teach the new letters.
Since we are online, ask the student to get a blank notebook, and draw the letter after you.
Then say the sound of the letter, and what letter in the student's Native language.  You can have the student draw the letter in the air after you do it.

Explain the difference between vowels and consonants, the i is a vowel, and the rest are consonants. Each syllable in English needs a vowel and a consonant.

Step 2 Find a word together that starts with the sound that the student might know.
Ask the student to draw the picture of the word, along with the letter in English in the notebook.
Do this for all the new letters.

Step 3. Go over the new vocabulary.
I will give a vocabulary list in a number of languages to make it easier for teachers to teach to many students.
Aske the student to draw a picture of each word in their notebook, along with the word in English.

Step 4 Read the story with the student.  I encourage the student to read the story alone, and then afterwards I read it again with the student.

Step 5  Ask the questions about the story: In the beginning, I use the student's native language, and accept that the student will answer in the native language.   Later on as the student knows more English I will ask the questions in English and expect the answer in English.

Step 6. If you can you can try to play a game with the student, you can use the templates on this link to write up games. https://www.teachenglishliteracy.org/copy-of-pages-for-learners

Questions:
Where is the dog in picture #2?
What is he doing in picture #3?
What happened in picture #4?
What did he do in picture #5?

Here is a cute game to play!
