Funny Phonics Lesson 8 The letter B b

The traditonal way to teach the alphabet in English is to teach all the letters in order.  I have done this as well, but it is not the best way to have the student understand meaning. This is why with the Hickey Method, which my Funny Phonics is based upon, doesn't start with the letter A.  We use i t p n s because we can get the student reading and learning real words right away.  I have written these little stories to practices these words over and over again.

Pedagogically, a person can remember new material if they encounter it 7 times.  So that is why we use games to increase the amount of times the student will encounter the word, and hopefully in a fun way.

Today we are learning the letter B  b  In the story, it is used both as a capital B and lowercase b.

Basic Lesson Plan to use with all the lessons in this series:

Step 1
Teach the new letters.
Since we are online, ask the student to get a blank notebook, and draw the letter after you.
Then say the sound of the letter, and what letter in the student's Native language.  You can have the student draw the letter in the air after you do it.

Explain the difference between vowels and consonants, the a e  i letters are vowels, and the rest are consonants. Each syllable in English needs a vowel and a consonant.

Step 2 Find a word together that starts with the sound that the student might know.
Ask the student to draw the picture of the word, along with the letter in English in the notebook.
Do this for all the new letters.

Step 3. Go over the new vocabulary.
I will give a vocabulary list in a number of languages to make it easier for teachers to teach to many students.
Aske the student to draw a picture of each word in their notebook, along with the word in English.

Step 4 Read the story with the student.  I encourage the student to read the story alone, and then afterwards I read it again with the student.

Step 5  Ask the questions about the story: In the beginning, I use the student's native language, and accept that the student will answer in the native language.   Later on as the student knows more English I will ask the questions in English and expect the answer in English.

Step 6. If you can you can try to play a game with the student, you can use the templates on this link to write up games. https://www.teachenglishliteracy.org/copy-of-pages-for-learners  Eventually these posts will be collected and will be available on Amazon as a book for English teachers to order as a hardcopy resource.  But you can use them now for free!
