Textbook Critique - Entry Point

Discussion:

This book, Entry Point is a phonics orientated textbook for remedial students that need to

learn how to read English.  The book goes step by step, using the same method as

Hickey.  But the authors add sight words,  to the lessons to facilitate the reading.  Most

lesson introduce one new letter, except for the first lesson which teaches 3 letters.

In order to better teach the students, I would add the letter arch and the alphabet cards.

The letter arch is useful to teach the order of the letters in the alphabet.

One point about how the authors teach the students to read, is that they suggest that the

teacher read aloud the text before the students read it,  I don't recommend this as these

type of students probably have very good memories and will memorize the text right

away. I would let the students grapple with the text first and correct only when absolutely

necessary.

At the beginning of each lesson, I would add the alphabet arch, lower case letters and

upper case letters, then do the letter cards with the drawing on the back, but here I would

use the words that the books give in the word rose, then go through all the exercises in the

lessons.  At the end of the lessons, if there is time, then I would do the games that are

described in the teacher's guide. One very good thing, is after a few lessons, there is a

quiz in the student's book. I would definitely have the students do the quiz as a self-check

on the student's own learning.

World's oldest Drum found in Greenland

The Drum has a long history and now the time frame for drum remains has been pushed back even further!  Drum remains have been found in Greenland! This is interesting because wood were preserved in the ice and snow.  These remains are 4.500 years old.  They were found at  ancient Inuit archaeological sites in  Qeqertasussuk and Qajaa.

Excavations in Western Greenland have found remains that are not found elsewhere because of the cold conditions.

Drums were and are still used in some cultures as an important part of religious ceremonies. The ancient drum parts show that in ancient Greenland, religion was already at a very developed stage.

The drum was made by tying the wood together in a hoop, and then a piece of animal skin was spread over the top.  The sizes of these pieces are similar to modern drums used in Inuit peoples who live in Canada.

A reconstruction of the drum by Martin Appelt, an archaeologist at the National Museum of Denmark, in collaboration with the Greenland National Museum and Archives, we know that the drums gave a loud, deep sound.

Before this discovery, the oldest drum fragments were found in Canada were 1000 years old.

All the remains are already on display in museums in Qasigiannguit, and at the Greenland National Museum and Archives in Nuuk

Questions:
Where were the drum fragments found?
Why were the wood preserved?
How old are the drum fragments?
What does this tell us about the culture of the people in Greenland at that time?
How did the drum sound?
How do we know?
How old are previous drum finds?
Why was the drum important to the Inuit?

Lesson about the Environment and the animals.

“Farewell to Shady Glade”  by Bill Peet

I would teach this book as part of a unit about the environment.  This could be for a 6th  or 7th grade class.

The book is about a group of animals that live in a nice place in the country, “Shady Glade,” which is in the process of being plowed under to make more room for the city.

First the birds leave, then the animals decide to check out the machines.  They find the tractors without their drivers, and try to understand what to do. The old raccoon decides to lead the animals away to try to find another place to live.  They board the train that goes toward another city, and on the way they see the beautiful countryside.  On the way to the city, they see the waste of the city, and the “river” which has turned into the sewage waste way.

After an hour the animals are on the way again, back out into the countryside.  This time a rock slide helps them disembark.  They have found an almost exact copy of “Shady Glade!”  The trees tremble, but this time it is only thunder and not the tractors.

Lesson:  I would first ask the students if they have ever been in a nature reserve.  What are the laws protecting nature reserves.

Then I would read the book, either giving each student a copy, or make a power point presentation with it.

Project:
I would put the students in groups, giving each group a different animal to study to find out what they eat, what type of environment they live in,

Animals:  crocodile hoopie bird   lions nachlieli bird wild goat  baboon monkey

The children could use the Internet, books and other materials. The final project would be a poster about their animal and present it to the class.  The project would take 2 weeks to complete.

Dear Mrs. Parks Lesson Plan Treasures Gr. 4

Rosa Parks found herself at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement in 1955.  She was tired, not only physically from her job as a maid, but just tired of being treated as a second class citizen. So, she sat down on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama and didn't get up. Well that bus was segregated and she should have gotten up to give her seat to a White man, but she didn't .  What happened next is that she was arrested.  This started the whole ball rolling, so now you have to read the selection to find out more.
