Peter’s Port to the West, The Story of the World, Book 3, Chapter 17


Peter the Great wanted to make Russia a western country and to trade with the west, but he had a big problem.  In those days you had to have ships to be able to trade, and even though Russia did have Azov, the straits were controlled by the Turks.  Peter was smart enough not to want to take on the Turkish army so he turned his attention northwards.

Homework: 
Write the eulogy of Peter the Great that was read at his funeral. Mention some good things and bad things that he did.
