Peter the Great, The Story of the World, Book 3, Chapter 17

Russia at this time was one of the biggest countries of the world, right in the middle of East and West.  Most of the traditional Russians wore long robes and beards.  Peter the Great wanted to bring Russia in the Western world.

Read pages 144-148 and discuss the questions with your teacher.

How old was Peter the Great when he became Czar? 
Who was his regent? What did she do? How did the noblemen feel about her? 
What did Peter do when he was 17?

What was the problem with the Russian port of Archangel? 
Where did Peter want to have a port? Why?

What did he learn from the enemy? 
What did he have built during the winter? 
What happened when he attacked again? 
Where did Peter go to learn about how to run a western type navy? 
What strange things did he personally do?
What did Peter think of William Penn? 
What did the Europeans think about Peter the Great's manners? 
What part of the head did he want the Russian men to change? Why didn't they want to do this? 
Which Western ideas did Peter the Great want people to do?  Which ones didn't he like? 

Homework: You are a noble in Peter the Great's court.  Write him a letter why you want to keep your beard.  Suggest to him a way to placate the nobles.
