The Reign of Terror was a very dangerous time to be in France, even if you weren't too enthusastic about the Revolution, you could be arrested and sent to the guillotine.

The Convict Settlement, Story of the World book 3 Chapter 24

England had run out of jail space so they sent their prisoners to other places. Before 1783, they sent them to the English colonies in America, but now after American independence, England had no place to send them.  So they remembered about New South Wales!

Discontent in the British Colonies The Story of the World Book 3








Read pages 182-184 and then discuss these questions. 

Why did the British Parlement  want to impose taxes on the Colonies in North America?

How did the English take over India?  Well it is an interesting story.  They fought for it, but not because of the English King, but because of the East India Company!  Read pages 161-163 and discuss the questions with your teacher.

We studied the three strong kings of India and how they made India stronger, but as most empires go, they get stronger and then get weaker.  This is what happened to India at this time.  Read pages 158-160 and discuss the questions with your teacher.

Peter’s Port to the West, The Story of the World, Book 3, Chapter 17


Peter the Great wanted to make Russia a western country and to trade with the west, but he had a big problem.  In those days you had to have ships to be able to trade, and even though Russia did have Azov, the straits were controlled by the Turks.  Peter was smart enough not to want to take on the Turkish army so he turned his attention northwards.

Scientific Farming, The Story of the World, Book 3, Chapter 16

Scientific Farming, up until now, farming was the occupation of the lowest level of  society.  The peasants were the ones who produced the food.  The way that they farmed was passed down from father to son.  Was this the best way to grow crops?  No one knew.  This was how it was always done.  But now with the Englightenment,  people began to study not only science, but also how to grow food more effectively.

Instead of going ahead in history, we are taking a side trip into what was going on in the history of ideas of science and philosophy.  Issac Newton and John Locke's ideas have shaped our modern world. Each came from a different viewpoint, Newton's ideas have changed about how we view the physical world but John Locke's ideas have shaped our poltics and the way we view education and government.  Read pages 136-138 for a compact view of these two great men.

Many people like to whitewash the history of North America and say that the Native Americans were peaceful peoples, but as today's lesson shows this was not always the case.  Some tribes were peaceful but others were not.
Read pages 127-129 and then discuss the questions with your teacher.
