The Spread of Slavery - Chapter 7 The Story of the World Book 3

The Spread of  Slavery - Chapter 7 The Story of the World Book 3

Amazon has this book: The Story of the World Book 3

Slavery had been a fact of life for many thousands of years before slaves were brought to the New World. Many cultures kept slaves, Egypt and Rome were famous for their depictions of slaves.  In some cultures were treated well, like in West Africa a slave could eventually buy himself free or relatives could all chip in to free a person. But when the Portuguese started the slave trade, they took the slaves away across  the ocean and this was no longer possible. We are going to learn the real story behind the Portuguese slave trade!  Hold on to your hat!

Read pages 66-68 and then discuss these questions with your teacher.

Look at the Triangular Trade route on page 61:  What items were traded at each place.  Why did the ships' captains always want to keep the ship's hold full? Which place do you think was more profitable?

Who was Queen Nzinga?
Where is Ndomba?
What did the Portuguese bring in return for slaves?
What was the real strategy of the Portuguese?
What rumors did the king of Nbomba hear?  Were they true?
Why did the Portuguese want more slaves?
Was there enough supply?
What did the Portuguese decide to do?
Were they successful?
How long did they fight?
What did Nzinga do?
Who was Mbandi? Was he a strong leader?
Who did he appoint to negotiate for peace?
Why did the Portuguese leader only provide one chair?
What did Nzinga do?
Was the negotiation successful?
How many years did Queen Nzinga rule?
What happened after Nzinga died?
What did the Portuguese name their colony?  Why?
