Past Perfect 

This tense is when an action took place in the past over a long period of time. 

It had taken Mildred several weeks of falling o and crashing before she could ride the broomstick reasonably well.

 - had taken means that the action was over a long period of time. 

We use the past tense with the word "had"  

Example: I had walked all day today and my feet are tired.
