The English were not to be outdone by the Spanish in South America , so they sent colonists to the New World. 

Sir Walter Raleigh got a charter to establish a colony in Virginia ( in honor of Queen Elizabeth, the virgin Queen), so he sent an expedition in 1584. They didn't do to well and in fact they went back to England after only a year.
