War Against the Colonies: Louis XIV Saves New France, The Story of the World, Book 3, Chapter 15

Many people like to whitewash the history of North America and say that the Native Americans were peaceful peoples, but as today's lesson shows this was not always the case.  Some tribes were peaceful but others were not.
Read pages 127-129 and then discuss the questions with your teacher.

Which country did the Sun King rule?
What was his territory in North America?
Which tribe was friendly toward New France?
Which disease did the settler's inadvertenly give the Native Americans?
How did the disease affect the Native Americans?
How did the Iroquois take advantage of the situation?
Which settlements did they attack?  Were they successful?
How did King Louis XIV help the settlers?
Why was it difficult for the soldiers to fight the Iroquois?
What did they manage to do finally do?
What problem did the settler's have now?
How did the King Louis XIV solve the problem?
Who were the  filles du roi? What did they do?  What was their motivation?
Who attacked Verchères?
Tell the story about the fort and how Marie-Madeleine de Vercheres saved it.




Homework:
You are a reporter for the Sun King Newspaper in Paris.  Write a report about Marie-Madeleine de Vercheres and how she saved Verchères.  Write a headline for your report.
