Europeans were looking for gold, and it was found in South America, but not on the Eastern Coast of North America.  What could the colonists provide England that no other place could provide?  Well, in North America there was lots of land, the temperature was just right for producing Tobacco.  It is a very labor intensive crop, so it made sense for the colonists to import slaves to do the work.
