How to write a Historical Narrative Part 1

Is there a time in History that you wish you could have been there?
Do you like to research this time period?

Is there an event that happened that maybe you wanted to finish differently?

If so then you can write a historical narrative fiction.

I have long suspected that Asherpanipal, King of Nineveh was the king that the Prophet Jonah didn't want to visit in Biblical times.

I finally found a scientific paper that supports my hunch.

So I am going to run with it.

Asherpanipal, or Asherbanipal was the king of Nineveh, a very aggressive king, conquering neighboring cities, so much that like his predecessors, eventually ruling over a large part of Mesopotamia.  He especially conquered Elam, cutting off the king's head, using it as a garden ornament, (there is a fresco that shows this) and even salting its land so it wouldn't be usable for farming.

So we can understand why Jonah wouldn't want to go there.  Would you?  Would it be safe?

Characters:
Yona ( Jonah) the prophet
we are not really sure of his profession, but seems to know a lot about the political situation in his country and surrounding kingdoms.

Asherbanipal, cruel king of Nineveh, but likes gardens, if there are decorated with the heads of his enemies, likes to go and fight with a sword, court intrigue, knows how to read and write cunniform, Akkadian, Assyrian languages.

His wife, the only woman mentioned in a fresco, can read and write too, very unusual for a woman in this time.

Assignment:
Choose a time in history and find out as much as you can about it.  Make a list of the characters you want to be part of your narrative, and details about them.
