Discontent in the British Colonies The Story of the World Book 3








Read pages 182-184 and then discuss these questions. 

Why did the British Parlement  want to impose taxes on the Colonies in North America? 
Which taxes did the colonists hate the most? 
Where did the colonists have to board the British soldiers? 
What did the colonists do about the taxes at first? 
What was the Boston Massacre?
 How many people died?  
What happened at the Boston Tea Party? 
How much tea did they "drink?"
What did Patrick Henry say about the taxes? 
What did King George III do about the taxes? 
Was it enough? 
Why was tea so important?
When did   The Continental Congress  have its first meeting? What did it do? 

Homework: 
Say Patrick Henry's speech out loud to your teacher by heart.  Say it as if you really mean the words! 

“We have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated….If we wish to be free…we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!…Gentlemen may cry , Peace, Peace—but there is no peace….Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
