There were many dynasties in China throughout history,  and many arose and fell because of many different reasons. The Manchu dynasty arose from foreigners from inside China itself. Read from pages 89-91 and then discuss these questions with your teacher.

Where did the Ming dynasty come from? 
What traditions did they have? 
What kinds of artwork did they do? 
Which ethnic group were they? 
Where is Manchuria? 
What did the Manchurians say the Han Chinese did to the people of Manchuria? 
What was the population of China at this time? 
How did the weather change?  What happened as a result of this? 
How did the government deal with this problem? 
What did the soldiers do? 
Who was Li Tzu-ch’eng, and what did he want to do? 
Why didn't Li Tzu-ch’eng, find any soldiers when he went to Peking? 
What did the emperor do? 
How did the Manchu take power? 
What was different about the hairstyle of the Manchu? 
How did the Manchu treat the Han? 
Who was K’ang-hsi, and how did he feel about the Han? 
What did he do with the taxes? 
How long did he rule China? 


Homework: You are in Li Tzu-ch’eng's council. Advise him about what to do about the Ming Dynasty, and the Manchus. 
Write your recommendations.
