This is a very ironic part of the history of the New World.  Each country wanted to get its share of the "riches" that were sure to be found in the New World.  And the Dutch, who were superb traders knew that they had to get in on the action.

Read pages 57-60 and then discuss these questions with your teacher.

Where did Dutch traders go and what did they do? 
Why did the government organize the Dutch East India Company?  
Who were two famous Dutch artists?

Which people were already on the Island? 
How did the Dutch cheat the Lenape? 
What was the culture clash between the Dutch and the Lenape? 
What was the most popular business in New Amsterdam?
What happened in 1647?  Who was appointed to lead the colony? 
Was he successful? Which laws did he pass? 
Why did the colonists call him nasty nicknames?  What were the nicknames? 
Why did he build a wall around New Amsterdam? 
Did it repel the English soldiers? 
What present did King Charles II give to the Duke of York? 
What did the Duke of York do? 
Why didn't the citizens of New Amsterdam fight back? 
Did the governor agree with this? 
What language did they speak?  Did they want to become English citizens? 
\What is the new name of Manhattan Island? 
Which landmarks are still there in this place? 


Homework: You are a Dutch citizen living in New Amsterdam, which has just been taken over by the English.  Write home to your relatives in Holland about what you feel about the English taking over.
